Given the political turmoil that is swirling, well, just about everywhere we thought we’d offer up a beautiful choice in today’s Friday Reads (remember we are focused only on women’s writers this summer) by Yasmine El Rashidi that is a moving political story that follows a woman’s life over three decades in a personal and political coming of age what has been called a brilliant debut novel.
The New York Times says it is “an eloquent first novel. . . . El Rashidi’s portrait of the unrest in her country is brutally vivid” while the Washington Post says it is “A wonderfully observed novel of personal awakening and politics in Cairo.”
